Sustainable Living Center

The United Nations has warned we have less than 20 years to limit climate change catastrophe. Locally, the ever-growing mountain of trash at the Bovoni landfill in St. Thomas is now visible from St. John. The Sustainable Living Center (SLC) is a vision born in response to these warnings. The SLC will be a space to address global climate crisis issues on the local level. The SLC will be a community space that will have an enormous impact on the island, advancing recycling, solar energy, composting, coop food market/gardening and education for a resilient carbon-neutral, net-zero path. Once built, the SLC will double as an emergency safety room during future hurricanes. Phase I of construction has began and upon completion of all phases, the SLC will feature:

  • Revitalized ReSource Depot and thrift shop to keep valuable items out of our landfills
  • Expanded recycling/upcycling facilities for aluminum, glass, plastic and cooking oil, focusing on making useful local products
  • Composting center & demonstration area
  • Solar power station with storage
  • Water collection and recycling system
  • Community center and gardens, organic food co-op and farmers market
  • Learning center for green job training and production of recycled products
  • Visitor’s center for education about green issues and eco-tourism offerings
  • EV charging station for electric cars and more
