Yes we CAN! Island Green’s Aluminum Can Recycling Program has collected, crushed and recycled more than 3 million cans on St. John to date. Aluminum is one of the only materials that more than pays for its own recycling and nearly 75 percent of all aluminum ever produced is still in use. Uncollected cans take up to 500 years to break down, so it is vital to keep them out of our overburdened landfills.
Island Green Living couldn’t do it without the help and support of the community. Our volunteers have been busy sorting, crushing and baling aluminum beverage cans at the ReSource Depot on Gifft Hill Road.
PLEASE RECYCLE CLEAN ALUMINUM CANS ONLY. Cans with cigarette butts or trash inside cannot be recycled and create more work for our can crushing volunteers.
Our aluminum recycling program operates as a drop-off facility centrally located on Gifft Hill Road just off Centerline on St. John. We also have a few bins that we monitor outside Connections in Cruz Bay, so those without cars and the restaurants in town can easily leave cans for recycling.
Whether you live in the community or are visiting our beautiful island, we invite you to join our volunteers. Please call us at 340-473-7870
Did you know??**
Aluminium can be recycled indefinitely
Every three months, Americans throw enough aluminium in the landfills to build our nation’s entire commercial air fleet or the equivalent of 7 billion dollars
The average person has the opportunity to recycle more than 25,000 cans in a lifetime
Recycling a single aluminium can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours
It requires 95% less energy and water to recycle a can than it does to create a can from virgin materials
