Let Your Voice Be Heard: Island Green Encourages Attendance at Public Hearing on USVI Solid Waste Management Plan Including Options for Vegetative Debris

St. John, USVI – April 6, 2026 – Island Green extends kudos to VIWMA and UVI’s Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC) for efforts to reach out to the public regarding territory plans to handle solid waste management, including our vegetative debris. All residents are encouraged to attend to give input as part of the process and weigh in on what to do, and what NOT to do.

Encourage chipping, mulching and composting vegetative debris as the best way to not only prevent landfill fires but also provide much needed soil nutrients, vital to supporting farmers and food security in the territory. See the petition for full details on the issues: https://c.org/CcQ8rrxDX6 or bit.ly/NoACI (case sensitive).

Bill 36-0232 aims to reverse the “Ban the Burn” law to allow air curtain incineration in the islands. This technology was previously prohibited because it emits hazardous gases, chemicals and particulate matter that lodges in the lungs, putting Virgin Islanders in danger.

The Public Hearing on USVI Solid Waste Management Plan will take place Thursday, April 9 from 5:30 – 7 pm AST:

  • St. Thomas: USV’s 13D Innovation Center
  • St. Croix: Alfredo Andrews Elementary School
  • Zoom ID: 743 7657 9756; Password: solidwaste (case sensitive)

Established in 2004, Island Green Living Association is a registered 501 (c)(3) not for profit organization on St. John dedicated to sustainability throughout the USVI. www.islandgreenliving.org
