Composting workshop draws more than 50 residents

More than 50 people came out to Git Hill School’s upper campus on Saturday for a composting workshop hosted by Iowa State University’s EARTH program, the school, Island Green Living Association, and the V.I. Waste Management Authority.

EARTH Program Director Dave Minner took the group on a tour of the school’s gardens and discussed the ins and outs of composting with the workshop’s participants.

“By composting, we can reduce nearly 50 percent of our waste from going to the landfill,” said Island Green Living President Harith Wickrema.

“With the help of WMA, St. John Community Foundation, and the EARTH program, Island Green will be starting a municipal-level mulching and composting program Dec. 2 If residents start doing backyard composting, it will not only help us reduce our waste volume, but also provide highly nutrient-rich soil that can be used for home gardening,” Wickrema said.
